MMP-9 immunoperoxidase staining in a section of a liver metastasis from a patient with colon cancer.

Interestingly, MMP-9 was not found in the front of the metastasis, though it was found up-regulated at the edge of the primary colon cancer. MMP-9 immunoreactivity was, however, found associated with necrotic formation within central parts of the liver metastasis. For more information, see Illemann et al,. 2006 and my Ph.D thesis

Triple immunofluorescence staining of a liver metastasis with desmoplastic growth pattern.

A section of a liver metastasis with desmoplastic growth pattern was processed for triple immunofluorescence using antibodies against cytokeratin (green signal), α-SMA (blue signal) and hepatocytes (red signal). For more information, see Illemann et al., 2009 and my Ph.D. thesis

Postdoc, ph.d.

Key Research Interests
Human cancers and inflammation, histology, ECM proteases.

Current Project
My primary project involves localisation studies in human gastro-intestinal cancer. This is done by using both immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridisations. I am primary looking at members of the plasminogen activation system and some of the MMPs. In the experiments, many of the antibodies produced in the laboratory are used together with markers for specific cell types in order to identify the cell type producing the ECM degrading proteases. The gastro-intestinal cancer project is supported by the Capital Region of Denmark Research Foundation. This project is done in collaboration with professor Ole D. Lærum.

I am also involved research on liver metastasis from colorectal cancer. This was my main project during my PhD. In this project we are trying to elucidate why the liver metastases can grow in different patterns, and if the different growth pattern give altered response to chemotherapy. This project is performed in close collaboration with Rikke Eefsen and with groups from other labs. See also www.lmrn.org

Furthermore I am assisting colleagues both here at the Finsen Laboratory as well as internationally with histology, which involves me in various localisation studies in both human and in animal tissue.
